Great title and topic. Though I have to admit, I found the start of your article a little off-putting, and I am far from an apologist of PUA — but I *am* a seeker of understanding and prefer generous interpretations to simplistic ones. First a snarky bit on body sprays; it was broad-brushed but I could roll with that for humor’s sake. And then the RomCom comment: I don’t much like the genre, but is this casual indictment somehow being linked to PUA? The third one I actually got a belly laugh reading: I can’t stand those awful mufflers either. But still my concern remained that you were leaning toward judgy and smug, a bit of looking down your nose at simpler fellows who though they may enjoy their loud cars, are hardly all disciples of pick-up “artistry”. You were wielding your version of the truth a too heavily, too eager to associate disparate things. It was alienating me. Somewhere halfway through I feel like you found the voice I was hoping to hear, less mean-spirited and more focused on the topic at hand. Some of the quotes I highlighted in there were incisive and wonderfully captured the damages and inherently false assumptions of the entire PUA mindset. I’d love to read more from the the author of that voice. I’m only speaking for my own experience reading your piece; I hope it was taken as intended: constructive, candid criticism. Please keep up the good work Joe!
