I love that you differentiate between the teachings of Jesus (largely laudable) and the religious dogma of mainstream Christianity (largely intolerant, and to me intolerable). At its best it teaches the centrality of forgiveness, and finding room for love of friends, neighbors, and enemies alike. At its worst it is misused as a club to shame, enslave, oppress, and murder. The irony of this hypocritical interpretation would be hilarious if the results were not so enduringly, repetitively tragic. The “houses of God” that dot our American landscape to me seem some of the least likely places to find something that remotely touches the divine. Being half-naked casting spells in the woods is much more my speed any day of the week — perhaps Sundays most of all.
