I think you (and a few other commenters denying that this is the reality of American Christianity) are engaging in the "no true Scotsman" logical fallacy. If these militants say they are doing this in the name of Christianity, as they are, then we should believe them. Until I see Christians fighting harder than anyone to defang their own fundamentalists, than I believe the entire religion deserves the contempt it is getting.
