Research bears this out too: there are numerous specific examples just in Native American history of women leading in politics and war, as well as hunting/fishing. And this is a tiny portion of the worldwide peoples of the Holocene epoch covered in the cited study (to be fair, the evidence is much easier to decipher within that more recent time period).
