The film was always an over-the-top treatment of the "woman scorned" and mental illiness tropes, but it really *really* hasn't aged well. Watch it now and you see Michael Douglas' character is nearly as toxic; slut-shaming, no accountability for her pregnancy, physical violence and intimidation. I mean, I take your point, violent women exist too, but I agree with Carlyn that the burdens to provide assurances for physical safety are not equivalent.
