This is a solid article--thank you for sharing! I was prepared for yet another simplistic condemnation, but the author covers key topics on education, consent, and ethical porn. Nuance is everything in this conversation, especially in US culture that already has socio-religious triggers that boil down to "sex is bad" and all the harms that stem from this backwards attitude. The problem isn't exposure to sex alone; it's that porn is filling the vacuum left by the lack of healthy positive sex education (among other things). There is credible research that children's exposure to sexuality has little harmful effects (a lot of the "research" to the contrary I find is rooted in that same socio-religious sex negativity). Many sex positive therapists and researchers argue that we need comprehensive sex education starting as early as age 4, and I could not agree with them more strongly. Prolific porn and the internet are genies that will not be going back into the bottle (nor should they IMO); the key is how we learn to balance, improve, and counteract the potential risks from them.

Musing and writing about sexuality and ethics. I think I made $8.75 last year from Medium. I’m not here for the money. I’m here to explore and engage.
