Your articles are thought-provoking, especially in challenging our cultural obsession with defining race. Where I think you fail to find resonance and support is your strident tone. You eagerly take the hammer of your own bias and ideas to Sarah Valentine’s article without any attempt to validate her personal and painful effort to try to make sense of her own journey. I’m glad I took the time to peruse your work and the TMA site before responding. I believe you are a serious thinker with ideas that challenge the predominant thinking about identity, which I support (whether I fully agree or not), but frankly my initial reaction from your seemingly callous reply was that you were yet another crackpot. This repeats itself in many of your articles, giving them a bit of “conspiracy theorist” flavor. It’s just one fellow’s opinion, but you may be better served with a kinder, less outraged approach to get people to consider your ideas. Validate, clarify, then redirect. Thank you again for presenting a differing point of view. And maybe put down that hammer 😉.
